As part of a groundbreaking cooperation with University Medicine Greifswald, GWA Hygiene is developing an innovative tracking solution for blood cultures. This development aims to optimize the critical time between sample collection and laboratory analysis, thereby improving sepsis diagnostics.
The Sepsis Challenge
Sepsis is a life-threatening infectious disease with alarming statistics:
- Time-Critical Treatment: Each hour of delay increases mortality risk by 8%
- High Mortality: Sepsis is present in one-third of all hospital deaths
- European Dimension:
- 3.4 million sepsis cases annually
- 700,000 deaths per year
- Economic Burden: Sepsis treatments cause 6 times higher costs
The Process Problem
In cases of suspected sepsis, timely analysis of blood cultures is crucial:
- Sample Collection at the patient’s bedside
- Transport to the laboratory
- Analysis for bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites
Time losses often occur during transport when blood cultures are temporarily stored or forgotten.
Our Solution: Intelligent Blood Culture Tracking
In collaboration with University Medicine Greifswald, we are developing:
Transport Protection Box
- Specially developed tracking system
- Secure sample storage
- Real-time localization
- Temperature monitoring
Digital Integration
- Connection to laboratory information systems
- Automatic documentation
- Process monitoring
- Alert system for delays
Benefits
- Complete traceability
- Minimization of transport times
- Improved sample quality
- Enhanced patient safety
Outlook
This development is an important step towards:
- Optimization of sepsis diagnostics
- Improvement of treatment quality
- Reduction of sepsis mortality
- Increased efficiency in daily hospital operations
The cooperation with University Medicine Greifswald underscores our commitment to innovative solutions in healthcare and the continuous improvement of patient care.
